Muslim Campus Life recently completed a series of Islamophobia training sessions for student-facing staff at Vanderbilt University. These sessions were designed to equip campus professionals with the knowledge and practical tools needed to better support Muslim students and address Islamophobia within the campus environment. The training series reflects a growing commitment among institutions of higher education to move beyond awareness and toward meaningful action in fostering inclusive campus communities.

Training Focus Areas

The sessions were designed to be both informative and interactive, covering key areas such as:

  • Understanding Islamophobia
We explored the different ways Islamophobia can manifest on campus—from overt discrimination to more subtle forms such as bias and microaggressions.
  • Impact on Students
We discussed how Islamophobia affects Muslim students’ sense of belonging, mental well-being, and academic experience.
  • Recognizing Islamophobia
Participants were guided on how to identify Islamophobic behaviors and patterns, particularly in student-facing roles.
  • Responding to Islamophobia
We provided practical strategies for responding to incidents in ways that are supportive, informed, and effective.

Interactive Learning Approach

To ensure the sessions were engaging and applicable, the training incorporated case studies and scenario-based discussions. These activities created space for participants to reflect, ask questions, and practice applying what they learned in real-world contexts. This interactive approach helped staff feel more confident in navigating complex situations and responding with care and accountability.

Participant Feedback

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many staff members shared that the sessions provided valuable insights and practical tools that they can immediately apply in their roles. Participants also emphasized the importance of ongoing learning and institutional commitment to creating a campus environment where all students feel safe, supported, and valued.

Looking Ahead

The completion of this training series marks an important step forward, but the work does not end here. Addressing Islamophobia requires sustained effort, continued education, and institutional accountability. Muslim Campus Life remains committed to partnering with campuses to provide training, resources, and support that advance equity and inclusion for Muslim students.

Muslim Campus Life recently hosted a webinar to officially launch the Confronting Islamophobia on Campus Toolkit, a resource designed to support higher education professionals in addressing Islamophobia and fostering more inclusive campus environments.

This launch marks an important step in advancing more informed, responsive, and supportive spaces for Muslim students across campuses.

A Timely and Needed Conversation

Islamophobia continues to shape the experiences of many Muslim students impacting their sense of belonging, safety, and overall well-being. While many institutions are committed to diversity and inclusion, there is often a gap when it comes to addressing religious-based discrimination. The Confronting Islamophobia on Campus Toolkit was developed to help bridge that gap by equipping campus professionals with both context and practical guidance.

Featured Speakers

The webinar featured leading voices in higher education and research:

  • Shafiqa Ahmadi and Darnell Cole, Authors of Islamophobia in Higher Education: Combating Discrimination and Creating Understanding
    • EJ Edney, Associate Dean of Belonging and Communities at Vanderbilt University

During this session, we formally launched our “Confronting Islamophobia On Campus” Toolkit and discuss:

  • Understanding the current landscape of Islamophobia in higher education
  • Institutional responsibilities and accountability frameworks
  • Strategies for building cross-campus coalitions
  • Practical tools for administrators, faculty, and student affairs professionals
  • Q & A

The session also created space for reflection and dialogue, encouraging attendees to think critically about their roles in fostering inclusive campus environments.

About the Toolkit

The Confronting Islamophobia on Campus Toolkit provides a structured overview of Islamophobia in higher education, including its historical context, its impact on students, and recommendations for institutional response.

It also highlights real campus-based examples and offers guidance for supporting Muslim and Muslim-adjacent students, making it a practical starting point for campuses looking to take action.

Moving Forward

The launch of this toolkit is just the beginning. Addressing Islamophobia on campus requires ongoing commitment, institutional accountability, and continued learning.

Muslim Campus Life remains committed to supporting this work through:

  • Trainings and workshops
  • Resource development
  • Campus partnerships and consultation

This year, Muslim Campus Life had the incredible opportunity to attend the NASPA Annual Conference 2026, one of the largest gatherings of student affairs professionals. Hosted in Kansas City, the conference brought together educators, practitioners, and thought leaders committed to advancing student success across higher education.

Representing Muslim Student Voices

Our mission has always centered on uplifting and supporting Muslim students on campus. Attending NASPA allowed us to bring these conversations to a broader audience, highlighting both the unique challenges and the resilience of Muslim communities in higher education. Throughout the conference, we engaged with professionals from diverse institutions, exchanging ideas and building connections that will strengthen how campuses support religious inclusion moving forward.

Presenting: Confronting Islamophobia on Campus

One of the highlights of our time at NASPA was the opportunity to present on:
“Confronting Islamophobia on Campus: Introduction to Islamophobia.”

Our session focused on:

  • Providing an introduction to Islamophobia and how it manifests in campus environments
  • Sharing real experiences of Muslim students navigating higher education
  • Offering practical strategies for educators and administrators to create safer, more inclusive spaces

The discussion was both meaningful and energizing. We were encouraged by the engagement from attendees who are actively seeking ways to better support their Muslim student populations.

Building Connections

Beyond sessions and presentations, NASPA provided a valuable space for connection. We met with student affairs professionals, diversity practitioners, and campus leaders who are passionate about equity and inclusion.

These conversations reaffirmed the importance of collaboration. Supporting Muslim students is not a standalone effort. It requires institutions, educators, and communities working together. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who attended our session, engaged in conversations, and expressed interest in our work.

Our presentation, “Confronting Anti-Muslim Bias & Islamophobia: Building Inclusive Admissions Practices,” drew admissions professionals eager to learn how unconscious bias affects Muslim applicants and what institutions can do to create more equitable processes. The session highlighted real-world examples of how Muslim students’ extracurricular activities, essay topics, and community involvement are sometimes viewed through a discriminatory lens, potentially impacting their admission chances at institutions that pride themselves on diversity and inclusion.

Tabling at the conference exhibit hall proved equally valuable, offering intimate conversations with admissions counselors, directors, and international recruitment specialists who shared their own observations and concerns about serving Muslim student populations. Many attendees stopped by to discuss practical strategies for training admission committees to recognize and counteract implicit bias, while others sought resources for supporting Muslim students once they arrive on campus. The exhibit space became an informal forum for sharing best practices, from creating inclusive application review rubrics to developing partnerships with Muslim student organizations and community leaders.

The overwhelmingly positive response at NACAC 2025 demonstrated the profession’s readiness to tackle this important work head-on. Attendees left with concrete action steps, including bias interruption techniques for application review, inclusive marketing strategies to reach Muslim families, and frameworks for creating campus climates where Muslim students can thrive authentically. As college admissions continues to evolve toward more holistic and equitable practices, addressing anti-Muslim bias isn’t just about fairness—it’s about ensuring that higher education truly serves all students and communities. The conversations that began in Columbus will undoubtedly continue as institutions commit to making their admissions processes more inclusive and representative of our diverse society.
